Reggio Emilia Program

Our KCP preschool program is modeled after the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy which have been heralded as the best preschools in the world. The Reggio approach cultivates and guides children’s intellectual, emotional, social and moral potentials. The principal educational vehicle involves children in long term engrossing projects, which are carried out in a beautiful, healthy, love-filled setting. Using the Reggio approach teachers listen to children, allow them to take the initiative, and yet guide them in productive ways. Our program is founded on the belief that all children have preparedness, potential, curiosity and interest in constructing their learning, in engaging in social interaction, and in negotiating with everything the environment brings to them.

The focus is on each child, not in isolation, but in relation with other children, with the family, with the teachers, with the environment of the school, with the community and with the wider society. We believe that for children to learn their well-being has to be guaranteed. Children’s rights must be recognized, not only children’s needs. Parent participation is considered essential and takes many forms; day-to-day interaction during work in the schools, discussions of educational andpsychological issues; and special events.

In addition to the classroom teacher and assistant, a teacher who is trained in the visual arts works closely with the other teachers and the children. The teacher is called an atelierista and a special studio called the atelier is set aside and used by all the children and teachers as well as by the atelierista. The atelierista works with teachers to plan projects, to carry them out, and to help them display the children’s work. By documenting the work of children, we encourage them to revisit their work and build upon prior experiences, and enable teachers to learn how children process information and use their understanding to create, and to help adults working with children to see into the mirror of a child’s mind by respecting what is reflected in the child’s interests. The results literally surround the people in this school. Everywhere there are paintings, drawings, paper sculptures, constructions, collages and etc.
