SILVANA
PATERNOSTRO is a Colombian-born journalist and author of In The Land
of God and Man: Confronting Our Sexual Culture, published by Dutton
in 1998. The book, a series of essays about women and machismo in Latin
America, was short-listed for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First
Nonfiction. Her articles and features have appeared in “The New
York Times Magazine,” “The New Republic,” “Newsweek”,
“Time,” “Spin” and “The Paris Review,”
as well as other magazines and journals. In 1999, Silvana was selected
by CNN/Time as one of Latin America’s leading voices for the next
millennium.
She is currently working on a memoir about growing up in the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Her short story, “Northern Ladies,” written originally in English, appears in "Se Habla Espanol: Voces latinas en USA,” an anthology of new Latino writers published by Alfaguara USA in November 2000.
She is frequently invited to speak on women’s issues, and on the culture and the politics of Latin America, post-Soviet Cuba and the U.S. Latino population. She has lectured extensively across the United States and in Latin America. She is fluent in English and Spanish.

y escritora barranquillera, actualmente vive en Nueva York. Su artículos
han aparecido en The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, The New Republic,
The Miami Herald y The Paris Review entre otros. En 1996 fue elegida
por Gabriel García Márquez para participar en uno de sus
talleres de redacción. Trabajó en Nicaragua donde cubrió
en 1990 la derrota de los sandinistas y luego se trasladó a Nueva
York. Allí se empezó a interesar en el tema del Sida,
particularmente en el contagio entre la población femenina. En
1997 ganó el premio Paul Taylor-Dorothea Lange del Center for
Documentary Studies por su trabajo periodístico en Cuba. También
fue seleccionada por la revista Time y por la cadena CNN como una de
las voces latinoamericanas del nuevo milenio. Fue nominada al premio
Pen por una obra de no ficción con su libro "En la tierra
de Dios y del hombre".
