Kelly Campbell

At one point in my life, deciding to leave Canada was a risk I wasn’t sure I was prepared to take. However, after spending just one year teaching at Karl C. Parrish, I’m thrilled to have taken the risks that come with teaching away from home.

This is my second year teaching at K.C.P as a fourth grade teacher. My experiences both in and out of school have been extremely rewarding, exciting, challenging and exhausting!

First, the elementary school environment is an extremely supportive place to begin a teaching career. Our school principal, Hectalina Donado has always been a constant source of strength, support and encouragement. Her strong leadership and democratic approach to teaching and working has helped to shape the school and its atmosphere. The staff is very welcoming and willing to help. The school is a professional place where teachers are highly regarded by parents and students. Standards are set very high, and the curriculum covers a lot of material. Parents provide much support, and are willing to help in any area. The students are full of life, imagination and laughter. The classroom environment is generally active, louder than in Canada and a fun place to work. It has been easy getting to know the children on a more personal level. Trust me, the students love to learn as much as they can about you! Also, there is a lot of room for leading any extra-curricular program including sports, drama, cooking, computers, school newspaper, etc.

Life outside of school has been extremely social! Colombians love to party any day of the week, and are very generous at providing their homes for any occasion. The culture here is fun, spontaneous and full of life. I have never been to a country so full of spirit or pride. The Colombians are generally welcoming and very friendly. Although Barranquilla is a very large city, it feels quite small. Most of the apartments for imports are within a block of one another, and everything you need is within walking, or bus distance. Getting groceries, shopping for clothes, picture development, hair appointments are all easily arranged and quite accessible. I bought a motorcycle right away and this has allowed me some freedom to move about the city. The streets always carry a high traffic volume (except on Sundays…ghostown!!), and you MUST have your wits about you while on the road.

It is inexpensive to go many places. I have been to Santa Marta, Parque de Tayrona, Cartagena and various beaches along the coast. There are many buses that leave continually from the terminal, and in general a two hour trip may cost about 5 dollars U.S. I have never experienced any unsafe travel, but I will not travel alone, or at night. It is also inexpensive to travel anywhere in South America when leaving from Barranquilla.

Overall, K.C.P. is an amazing school with a lot to offer people in Barranquilla. I have enjoyed my time at the school and it has been a privilege to work at a highly regarded school.
